80's Month Day 4: Road House

80's month rolls on and today's film is 1989's Road House starring Patrick Swazye.
Now this is one of those films where no problem seems to have a logical solution, that makes it both fun and pretty dumb.

Swazye play James Dalton a well renowned, expert bouncer who is recruited by bar owner Frank Tilghman to come and take over security at his place, the 'Double Deuce' in Mississippi. Dalton accepts the offer and heads down to check things out and find a place to stay. The first night at the bar is mostly an assessment of how bad the place is and, within days, Dalton has began to turn the Double Deuce around. He's teaching ineffective bouncers some lessons, he fires a bartender who's stealing money, etc. However, it isn't long before he makes a powerful enemy... It seems that virtually the whole town is run by businessman Brad Wesley (played by Ben Gazzara), and nothing happens in these parts without his approval. Wesley of course has his crew of hired goons who keep causing problems of at the Double Deuce, and one night Dalton is even stabbed in the side. He goes to the hospital where he meets doctor, and this films love interest, Dr. Elizabeth "Doc" Clay (played by Kelly Lynch). Eventually, even Dalton needs a bit of help and he calls in his mentor and fellow expert bouncer, Wade Garrett (played by Sam Elliott). The feud between Dalton and Wesley continues to get worse: there are fights between Dalton and Wesley's henchmen, Wesley blows up a local shop that belongs to Dalton's new girlfriend's dad, Dalton kills a guy, Wesley has one of his men drive a monster truck through a car dealership... it gets pretty ridiculous. Eventually though, the town has had enough of Wesley's violence and extortion and he's murdered by local business owners (none of whom are arrested).

It's not a perfect movie by any stretch, but it's enjoyable in a sort of over-the-top, so bad it's good way. It's worth checking out if you've never seen it.
I give this one a 3 out of 5.
